He was a 1969 graduate of Booker Washington High School, received a bachelor of science degree in 1973 from Talladega College, Talladega, and a master of social work degree in 1975 from Atlanta University, Atlanta. He was employed in 1975 with the SC Department of Mental Health as a clinical social worker at the SC State Hospital, where he remained for 21 years and the past two years at Crafts-Farrow State Hospital. He was a member of St. James Church, where he served as trustee, choir member, Men's Club member, Father's Day Chairperson and pastoral advisor. Surviving are his wife, Shell Fay Martin; daughters, Erika Le Shawn and Kristin Alexis Martin; son, Rodney Williams; mother, Celia Phelps Martin; and second mom, Fannie Phelps Adams; godparents, Otelia and Isaac C.
