He was a journalist and principal of Magellan Marketing and Splash Marketing. ste was a free lance writer for "The Post and Courier" and "The Charleston Regional Business Journal." He was a graduate of Brooks School in Andover, Mass. and Washington College.

He moved to Greenwood in 1939 to take lead the Greenwood College of Commerce. He was a US Navy veteran serving as a lieutenant in the Pacific during World War II. He was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as a teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, deacon, and elder. Also, he served as a trustee for Faith Memorial Chapel at Cedar Mountain, N.C., for the past twenty years. He was a Rotarian serving as president of the Pleasantburg Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow.

He also served as a board director for Connestee Falls in North Carolina. He worked as a food broker in his earlier years and founded Fred E. Reed and Associate, Modern Storage Co. Mrs. Smith, wife of the late George Dewey Smith, died Thursday, March 4, 1999. Born in York County on Christmas Day 1900, she was a daughter of the late Frederick Eugene and Annie Lee Carroll Hoffman. A longtime member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Rock Hill, she was a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church in Columbia.

She was known for making the almost lost art of tatting. She shared her talent with friends family creating table cloths, napkins, linens, handkerchiefs, baby clothes and precious heirlooms made with love. Born in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Abraham L. and Annie B. Ward. She was an administrator at Morris College for forty-five years. Surviving are her daughter, Karen Artis Tiller of Sumter; sisters, Georgia Boyd of Kingstree, Alice Johnson of Miami, Earline Artis of Sumter; brother, Victor Ward of Kingstree.

Surviving are her daughter, Marilyn W. Haufler; granddaughter, Robin R. Barnes; Joshua and Jessica Barnes, all of Camden; great brother, Troy Watson of Charlotte; step Martha W. Tomberlin Monroe, N.C., Stella W. Mullis of Midand, N.C.; eight step-grandchildren; 13 grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three sisters; four brothers. James Weatherford CAYCE Services for James O. Weatherford, 64, of Cayce, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel, of West Columbia, conducted by the Rev. Wendell Dixon, with burial in Celestial Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mr. Weatherford died Thursday, March 5, 1999.

Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Charlie and Nell Stokes Weatherford. Formerly of Darlington, he had been a local resident since 1964. He attended Cayce First Baptist Church and was retired from Rose-Talbert Paint Company. He was also retired as a Volunteer Fireman with the Cayce Department of Public Safety where he worked for over 12 years. Surviving are his wife, Annie Mae Weatherford of Cayce; daughter, Kay Cranford of Winston Salem, N.C.; stepsons, Johnny Legette of West Columbia, David Legette of Columbia, Harry Legette of Lexington; sister, Bobbie Langston of Darlington; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
