Des Moines Register Pans 1 Pel I I0C8 1 Des Moines High School Graduates BOY- Continued from Page One ij ss rv Among Roosevelt's Graduates Reminiscing about their student days at Roosevelt High School are three foreign students who were among 380 seniors receiving diplomas Thursday night at the school. From left are Yuichl Akihiro, 18, of Japan, who lives at 4222 Center while in Des Moines; Martin Orrbeck, 18, of Sweden, living at 4306 Ashby and Marja-Tcrttu Kaarina Kosonen, 19, of Finland, living at 5100 Welker ave. Both Yuichi and Marja-Terttu are American Field Service exchange students. Martin has been attending Roosevelt under the International Christian Youth Exchange program. acuon coma result in per manent removal of the boy from the home.

The parents delinquency action, which claims the boy hit his mother, could result in disciplinary ac tlon against the boy. "It would appear that this boy has been made into 'boy Judge Tid rick said. "Here's a boy who's either abused or abusive. Who knows?" Hit Mother Juvenile court officers said thi boy readily admitted that he, had struck his mother. However, he claimed she had him "cornered" and was beat ing him with a club, so he struck back.

judge Jidrick said the boy also is accused of attacking a 1 4-yeaT-old brother (not adopted) while baby-sitting with him in the back yard. A Tussle The boy told the judge that the younger brother had pulled him off a chair and the two were tussling. Officers said public school medical authorities recently informed the mother that the boy's eyes tested 2065. Nor mal is 2020. Second Test After the mother replied that the boy was "faking," officers said, the school ar ranged another test.

the result was worse 2070. It also was suggested that a constant pain in the boy's side was chronic ap pendicitis. The mother still insisted the boy was "faking," court offi cials said. Officers said school officials reported that the boy never has been per-mitted to participate in extra curricular activities and the parents never have appeared for parent-teacher conferences. Juvenile court officials said the parents have termed the boy "too dumb" to be in school, and that they want him to quit at age 16.

But school officials have said the is "bright," despite his family circ*mstances, the court officers added. Aunt's Information Court officers said much of the information came from an aunt who suspects the want the boy out of school so he can relieve the mother of all household chores. Judge Tidrick said the father is a carpenter. Salvation Army To Visit Shut-ins The Salvation Army will observe National Shut-In Sunday by visiting shut-ins at nursing homes, hospitals, and county institutions Sunday. The League of Mercy department of the Salvation Army is in charge of the EXPRESS FAITH, SCHIOTZ URGES Ths Register's Iowa News Service) DECORAH, IA. Bold ex-pression of Christian faith was recommended to church members here Thursday to offset a growth of "intemperate living" in modern society. Rising alcoholism and narcotic addiction, increasing sales of obscene literature, and the "scandal" of one divorce for every four U.

S. marriages were cited as among "manifestations" in the national milieu that the church "has lost some of its preservative leaven." These observations came from the Rev. Dr. Fredrik A. Schiotz, Minneapolis, president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church as he reported on the "State of the Church" to the body's south central district convention.

Dr. Schiotz admitted record U. S. church memberships and Sunday school enrollments were reasons to be thankful, but he cautioned that "honest appraisal" requires that gains of materialism and secularism "should also be kept in purview." Noting increasing efforts by "godless ideologies" which attempt "to push out of tha minds of men al! acknowl edgment of God," he warned church people not to become "so preoccupied in looking at others that we lose sight of the deadly sins which seem to become a part of our culture." Trip for Jordahl Dr. Verner T.

Jordahl, Ma son City, for years president of the district, received a gift of more than $4,600 to used for a European vacation for him and his wife. The award was presented Thursday evening at the final evening session of the convention at Luther College. Born at New London, the 60-year-old Dr. Jordahl is a graduate of Luther aand Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.

"You have had the chance and opportunity for a high school education, and this is not a gift but a challenge." Roosevelt graduated 380 students, the city's largest class. Second largest was East's with 298. North had 254, Tech 208 and Lincoln 181. Shelley at Tech Jack Shelley, manager of the WHO and WHO-TV News bureau, told Des Moines Technical High School graduates: "You are going' to live in an era and at a speed com pletely different from the one in which I spent most of my life. "During most of your lifetime people will come into this world, live their lives and pass out of this world again in ways undreamed of as lit tle as 40 years ago." But, Shelley reminded his listeners, technological progress notwithstanding, some old fashioned human values will still prevail.

"Amid 'all this scientific progress man still has to learn how to live with his fellow men, and it is in this area that the success or failure of your generation will be measured, he Willsey at Lincoln At Lincoln High School, Bruce A. Willsey, vice-presi dent and general manager of Solar Aircraft, told his listeners that "our future society, like the present one, will simply be a reflection of the character of the individu als who constitute it." "In the eternal plan you are intended to be masters of your life, but you must gain mastery through your will to control the circ*mstances which surround you regardless of how adverse they may Willsey said. He stressed the importance of sound human relations to a full and satisfying life. "This is the ability to get along with people, the desire to understand and evaluate the other person's point of view without prejudice, the knack of being able to express oneself with dignity and purpose and to be able to express individuality and yet be tact ful," he said. Coppock at North Dr.

W. H. Coppock, pro- fessor-of chemistry at Drake University, spoke at North" High School. "We are creatures of habit and must accept the tendency of the mind to form habits and make use of this tendency," he said. "This makes it easier to form certain habits and at the same time more difficult to break undesirable ones.

"Since we have to live with our habits, it is doubly important that we form those that contribute to our physical, mental and spiritual well-being." Coppock said that "the most difficult person to manage ourselves since this THE BETTER HALF requires a condemnation of oneself, followed by self-discipline." Chinn at East East High School graduates were urged to show justice toward their fellow men. The speaker, Gerald Chinn, associated professor of law at Drake University, said that "too many times we pass judgment on our fellow men without knowledge of the facts." "Usually we see our side or the side we want to see because of our bigotry, intolerance or prejudice," he said. "Sometimes truth and justice are quiet and speak as a small, faint echo while the noise and confusing chatter of ignorance and intolerance tend to distract. "Wherever you may be and whenever the situation arises involving your passing judgment on your fellow men, I ask that you render justice with the same dignity and decorum as though you were truly sitting in a court of law."
