If you’ve ever wondered how to grill salmon on a cedar plank, I’ve got the recipe for you! This Cedar Planked Grilled salmon is the ultimate summer dinner!
I am always up for trying new things. Shockingly, I have never tried grilling salmon, likely because I always have perfect results with my fail-safe oven method. I decided it was worth trying, because it was nice outside and I didn’t feel like doing ANY dishes whatsoever. First I heated my grill, seasoned my fish and oiled it generously. I sprayed my grill with cooking spray. Then added the fish and let it cook until the skin was crispy. I tried to use tongs to flip the fish. Nothing happened. The spatula didn’t yield much nicer results, but I did manage to flip the fish to cook the other side. Sort of. I also “sort of” got it off the grill.
I mean, it was totally delicious, but it looked like a hot mess.
The next day, I was back at the grocery store, as I seem to be multiple times a week now, and I caught sight of a display of cedar grilling boards next to the seafood counter.
Hmm. I have those at home, but I use them as photo props. Maybe I should try their intended purpose and do a cedar planked grilled salmon.
The great thing was that the board added such a unique, smoky, grilled flavor to the fish, but all I had to do was throw the board in the trash for clean up. I didn’t have to oil the fish more than normal. I didn’t have to flip it. It was just a smokier version of what I already do in the oven- perfect for spring/summer/fall evenings where I don’t want to turn my oven on.
What I used for seasoning
I poured over a whole grain mustard sauce that added a little savory sweetness to the fish, as well ashelped to keep the fish moist. You could really do whatever you wanted here, if you don’tapply some sort of a glaze or sauce and you go for a dry rub, just make sure to dot it with somebutter and/or drizzle it lightly with olive oil.
The whole dishwas just lovely, top to bottom.

Cedar Planked Grilled Salmon

Instructions
Soak the cedar board in water for at least 30 minutes.
Heat a grill over high heat.
Sprinkle a board with olive oil. Add the fish to the board and top with desired sauce or seasonings.
Add the prepared board to the grill, then turn the temperature to low and shut the lid of the grill.
Cook the fish until it is cooked through and flakes with a fork. 15-20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fish.

Ha! I have been cooking salmon since I was 15 and I never did the plank because I thought it may have been too easy and too good to be true. I was wrong. It was and is fantastic isn’t it! Plus Copper River Salmon season is upon us! So get ready! It’s even better with the planks!

Love this!! Salmon is our family’s #1 favorite protein…especially when we can easily grill it during the summer. I need to remember the cedar plank trick!

Trust me… its WAY easier than trying to grill it on the grates! Haha!
Place the plank on the grill rack and allow it to preheat about 5 minutes or until it begins to crackle and smoke. Lay the salmon onto the plank and cover, grilling salmon on the cedar plank 12 to 20 minutes, depending on its thickness.
Place one salmon portion on each cedar plank, skin side down, then place the plank in the grill. Cook with the lid closed to allow the smoke to flavor the salmon. Cook until the salmon flakes easily with a fork, or the internal temperature reaches 145°F, approximately 10 minutes or less for a 1” salmon.
If you're planning to use your cedar plank on a grill, soak for 1-2 hours in any temperature water. It's important to soak through so that the wood doesn't catch fire when it comes into contact with open flame. If you're planning to bake with your plank, soak your plank for 15 minutes in hot water.
To prevent your fish from sticking to the board, very lightly brush it with cooking oil on the side that the fish will sit. There is no need to flip the fish. Plank cooking is indirect because the food is insulated from the direct heat.
Salmon that has no skin tends to stick to the grill and can easily fall apart when being turned over. When it comes to skinless salmon, the major benefit is that the wood acts as a barrier between fish and grill. This omits the issue of your meal getting stuck to the grates.
Instructions. Set the EGG for direct cooking without a convEGGtor at 400°F/204°C. Soak the plank in water for at least 30 minutes. Cover the salmon in the seasoning, lemon zest and brown sugar; arrange the orange slices on top.
Cedar planking is a way of cooking salmon by placing it directly on soaked cedar planks on a hot grill. The cedar plank infuses the salmon with a gentle smoky flavor, making the fish taste more rich and complex. It's fantastic, and a great alternative to Smoked Salmon if you don't have a smoker!
Salmon cooked on soaked cedar planks on a grill preheated to medium heat should flake perfectly with a fork after about 20 minutes. Don't forget that the fish will continue to cook after it is removed from the heat.
If you are planking in the oven, your plank will be in much better condition after use than if you are planking on the grill. Q: How do you reuse grilling planks? A. We do not recommend using planks more than once for sanitary reasons.
Cure a new cedar plank by placing it on the grill, closing the lid, and heating for two minutes on each side. This enhances the flavor and helps avoid warping. If you're using a charcoal grill, place the plank over ash-coated coals. For a gas grill, preheat to high and then turn down to medium for cooking.
Technically, a grilling plank can be used multiple times but you'll only get the fresh wood flavor on the first use, so we don't recommend it as it defeats the whole purpose of cooking with planks.
For nearly all situations, treat Cedar with a penetrating oil such as Wood-X. Oil works like moisturiser for Cedar, deeply replenishing the natural oils and keeping the Cedar protected – and looking great – for many years to come.
Plank grilling involves cooking food atop a plank of wood (most commonly cedar), usually over a flame or coals. A general rule of thumb is to grill for 6 to 8 minutes for every inch of fish. So, if your salmon fillet is one-inch thick, you should grill it for 3 to 4 minutes per side. You'll know it's done when the flesh turns opaque and easily flakes when pressed with a fork.
Do you flip salmon on the grill? Yes, if you're cooking the fish directly on the hot grates, you'll start with the flesh side down first (skin facing you) then flip it over once after 2 to 3 minutes or when you see some grill marks on the layer touching the grates.
