LLNL is operated by Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC, for the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. Lawrence Livermore National Security ( LLNS) is a limited liability company (LLC) that assumed management of the Laboratory on Oct. 1, 2007.

Laboratory was split apart from Berkeley campus in 1971. Lab created as an offshoot of the University of California, Berkeley's Radiation Laboratory in 1952 and it became its own separate laboratory in 1971.
