Ingredients for Baked Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes – Choose whole, unblemished sweet potatoes that are the same size so they cook at the same rate. No need to peel! No sweet potatoes? Yams or regular potatoes can be substituted!

Seasonings – Just a bit of olive oil gives sweet potatoes a crispy skin, but leftover bacon grease will also give them a deliciously smoky flavor as well! Use your favorite seasonings like lemon pepper, chili seasoning, or Italian seasoning.

Toppings- Savory potatoes can be topped with butter, sour cream, sliced green onions, bacon bits, or homemade chili if you want to make them a main dish. Sweeter toppings can be a little butter, brown sugar, and a handful of mini marshmallows or chopped pecans. Try this sweetened praline version for a more festive potato.

FAQs

How long does a sweet potato take in an air fryer? ›

Start by poking holes in sweet potatoes with a fork. Then, toss them in olive oil, salt, and pepper before air frying. Step 2- Air fry. Next, put them in the air fryer basket and cook for 18-20 minutes or until they are fork-tender.

Why soak sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

If you'd like, you can soak the sweet potato slices for 30 minutes up to 2 hours before frying to remove excess starch. Personally, though, going through this step didn't make a real difference for my fries. Peels on or off — it's up to you!

Is it faster to bake a potato in the oven or air fryer? ›

Less time: The baked potato made in the air fryer took less time than when baked in the oven. A 10-ounce potato took 40 to 45 minutes to get tender and crisp, whereas a potato baked in the oven took about 1 hour. Crisper skin: The skin of the air fryer baked potato became considerably crispier.

Is it better to bake sweet potatoes in foil or not? ›

Recipe Tips

No need to wrap your potatoes in foil though—you want them to really feel that oven heat, rather than steam. The skins: Removing the skin is completely up to you. I personally enjoy the texture of sweet potato skin, and you'll get some added nutrients and fiber.

Why are my sweet potatoes not crispy in air fryer? ›

If your air fryer fries are turning out soggy it is likely because you are over-crowding your air fryer basket or using too much oil. For the best results, use just ½ Tablespoon of oil per sweet potato and cook your fries in a single layer so that the air has room to circulate.

Why are sweet potatoes soggy in air fryer? ›

There are two things that can combat soggy sweet potato fries in the air fryer. First, remove as much moisture from the surface of the potatoes as possible. A quick pat all over the cut potatoes with a paper towel can help with that. Secondly, leave adequate space between each of the fries while air frying.

Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Is it better to bake potatoes in foil or not? ›

In the examples above you nearly double the cost of the potato for the 50 sheets, and for the 500 sheets add nearly 36% to the cost. NEVER BAKE POTATOES IN FOIL. Foil wraps will not decrease baking time, but will result in a soggy potato interior with wet skin.

Is air frying potatoes healthier than baking? ›

The evidence so far suggests that air frying is healthier than deep-frying, but it's not necessarily healthier than pan frying or baking in an oven. What really matters is your overall dietary pattern and the quality of the food you're eating.

Should you poke holes in sweet potatoes before baking? ›

Before baking, use a fork to prick each sweet potato several times. You don't need to jab the fork in deep. We're creating steam vents. Otherwise the pressure in the sweet potato could build up so high in the oven that it explodes—an unlikely possibility but one best avoided!

Is it better to peel sweet potatoes before baking? ›

Whether or not you peel the potato is completely personal preference; we leave ours on as I enjoy the texture. If you are serving children or sensitive eaters, consider peeling the sweet potatoes before roasting. Cut Uniform-ish Pieces.

Is it better to boil sweet potatoes or bake sweet potatoes? ›

Baking can also cause an 80% drop in vitamin A levels, twice as much as boiling. Therefore, from a nutritional standpoint, boiling rather than baking should be recommended for cooking sweet potato.

How long does it take for a potato to get soft in the air fryer? ›

Preheat an air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Rub potatoes with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parsley. Place potatoes in the air fryer basket. Cook in the preheated air fryer until potatoes are soft, 40 to 50 minutes, depending on potato size.

Why do sweet potatoes turn black in air fryer? ›

Why do my air fryer sweet potato fries turn black? Sweet potatoes contain a higher concentration of sugar than standard potatoes, and caramelize as they cook in the air fryer. If you find the fries are darkening too quickly or deeply, cook at a lower temperature, or for a shorter period of time.

Why soak potatoes for air fryer? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.
